At the age of 19, Frederick bought 40 Acres adjoining his step father, John O’Brien’s farm. He started trading in horses and would gather a herd and drive them to Austin, a small town in southern Minnesota. He continued doing this and the area being rich agricultural land, bought some land and decided to make this his home. In 1880 he married Lavanchia Jeannette Pratt Powers and from this union came 8 children.
